Another state I have been to multiple times, without much to show, is Tennessee. Tennessee is The Volunteer State, gaining this title because of, according to the Tennessee Historical Society, “the key role played by volunteers from the Tennessee militia. Newspapers of the day touted the military spirit of the men of Tennessee. That reputation was solidified in the Mexican American War of 1848, when President James K. Polk of Tennessee issued a call for 2,600 volunteers and 30,000 Tennesseans answered.” Now that is patriotism!
Chattanooga
I was lucky to visit Chattanooga during a family wedding. I took my daughter with me, who was three at the time, so we were limited in activities. The aquarium was a great choice.
Nashville
When my son was eight, we went to the National Chess Championship in Nashville with his school chess team. The tournament was held at the Gaylord Opryland, a hotel that is so expansive it feels like its own city. I never left the hotel.
Memphis
The Memphis airport is fairly large and I nice gateway to and from the South. As such, I was able to quickly visit at the end of my friends’ trip to Alabama and Mississippi. We were flying home from Memphis so we did a drive by of Graceland. Make sure you get your tickets in advance!
Clearly there are plenty of reasons to visit Tennessee. I look forward to finding more!
